25-30: The new “awkward stage”

In two weeks, I’ll be turning the big 2-7. Each year as my birthday approaches, I am completely baffled at the age I am. 27? When I was 12, 27 was ancient. Like, old person. Married with kids and a house and boring. It’s inevitable we will grow older each year so this shouldn’t be so shocking, and you’re going to hit those milestones we once saw as never-gonna-happen-cuz-that’s-too-far-away. Like age 30. I can’t believe in three years I’ll be 30! Ew! (I know everyone older than me reading this is rolling their eyes at me right now. I know because I roll my eyes at 22 year olds that express the same concern as me.) But when I crept into my mid-20s and now the latter half of this transitional decade, I’m noticing how I hang on to some things I did in the earlier half of this decade (and even earlier than that), but I’m also doing new things that only “old people” do. So I’ve dubbed 25-30 the new awkward stage. Forget ages 12-16ish. That time period was awkward enough. But your 20s are a whole new awkward stage. You graduate college. And after you graduate is hard enough figuring out life. I’ve got some stuff figured out. But everyone is different at these ages. Some people I graduated from high school and college with are married with two kids livin’ in the burbs. I’m still livin’ in the burbs, but I’m not married with children. In fact, I still live at home with my parents. I know, the shame. But my bank account is lookin’ mighty fine from that savings. And apparently, I’m in good company.

So with that, following is a list of things I do at (almost) 27 to make this the awkward stage:

Keeping secrets
I’ve always been a pretty good secret keeper. But when you’re this age, there’s special things you need to keep secret for some time. Case in point: pregnancies. No, not me! Friends, family. In the last two months or so, I’ve learned about three people close to me that are having babies. And I’ve had to keep it a secret until doctor’s appointments were made, and all the right people were told. Same goes with engagements (again, not me). There’s a certain protocol about keeping it on the DL (that’s down-low for all you old geezers reading this), so all the right people are told so your second cousin won’t find out on Facebook and get pissed. I want to shout from the Facebook rooftops about all these babies and engagements, but if it’s not mine, it’s not my place. So, hush hush. Then when it IS time to announcement, I will create a hashtag for your baby.

Sleep patterns
I’m notorious for sleeping to obscene hours of the day. I once slept ’til 5 p.m. in college. It’s not something I’ve completely grown out of (example: today I stayed in bed until noon). But it’s something that happens just once in awhile now. Now it’s the grind Monday through Friday and up at about 7 a.m. On the weekends, I like to get in an early yoga class so I have to get up early. Or I have stuff to do. Adult stuff like run errands. When I was little, I used to pretend I was running errands. WTF. Errands suck. Why did I ever long to do them?

New sleep patterns also mean:

  • Falling asleep at 9 p.m. on the couch Friday nights because I’m exhausted from the work week
  • Going out, but leaving far before the bars close because I’m tired, and making sure I drink a glass of water before bed so I can be productive the next day and not be hungover
  • Rarely going out on the week days because it’s a “work night,” but fully getting on board with happy hours
  • Not wanting to get up at 5 a.m. to work out or get a head start on the workday, but very willing to jump out of bed for Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding
  • FEELING it the next day at work if I don’t get to bed until midnight. And that’s without alcohol
  • Bragging about getting a solid 8-hour sleep

Clothes and whatnot
This is also an awkward and transitional stage for my wardrobe, including:

  • Still rockin’ Victoria’s Secret PINK, even though it’s specifically for college girls
  • Now having a slight obsession with Ann Taylor LOFT, even though a few years ago I thought it was for older women
  • Still like to put braids in my hair
  • I own a trench coat
  • I not only get pants hemmed, but tailored
  • High heels overpower flip flops in my closet
  • I now choose comfort over cuteness with shoes…most of the time (I’m not that old)
  • Still shop the juniors’ department (love you BP from Nordstrom)…OK and sometimes rummage the kids department (when you’re short, you save)

Other things

  • Retired from reading Cosmo, but just picked up the latest issue of Real Simple
  • Still let my mom cook for me…but now I ask how she prepares things so I can learn
  • Read food blogs, bookmark recipes, and COOK!
  • Facebook with the best of ‘em…but cringe when I see younger kids putting inappropriate things on there
  • Speaking of Facebook, I constantly stalk people’s wedding photo albums, even if I don’t know them. Is this normal?
  • Still watch MTV…but I also like the news, TLC, and wedding shows (Say Yes to the Dress, anyone?)
  • Coffee is my daily must-have. It is my crack
  • I exercise for health, not to just to be skinny
  • Now if I pig out, it makes me sick. In college I could binge eat and drink with the best of ‘em
  • Boredom is just a pastime
  • Will still watch Anchorman over and over…but now I’m interested in watching all the year’s Oscar-nominated films
  • I actually like to drink a beer or glass of wine with my meal (in college this would have made me vomit)
  • I can still pump a keg…but now I can open a bottle of wine (no, not boxed)

OK, my fellow awkward 20-somethings. What would you add?

An ode to the Steelers

This is clearly not a sports blog, or a Steelers blog, but I have to give a shout-out to the AFC Champion Steelers today! I cannot believe that we are going to yet another Super Bowl. We are so spoiled as fans. BUT, our team deserves it. They are the masters. And we have impeccable ownership and coaching. If I could make a Dick LeBeau/Mike Tomlin/Rooney father and son sandwich for lunch today, I would. So, here are some of my most favorite Steelers things I am loving right this second. (P.S. Check out One for the Other Thumb for a REAL Steelers blog.)

Saw this little ditty on my way to work this morning

Hat tip to Angela over at The Burgh, Exposed (another great Pittsburgh blog) for this one

No words. Just happiness.

Winter projects

I’m pretty anti-New Year’s Resolutions. They may work for some, but we all feel compelled to make them since that’s the norm. Come February 1, the thought of them will be gone for most who make them.

But, I am for setting goals year ’round. You know how they say to never start a diet on a Monday? Well, the same goes for never setting a “resolution” on January 1. At least in my opinion. However, I do think January, February, and even March are really good months to get stuff done. Why? Well, if you live in a cold climate like I do, you know these are the most miserable months EVER. Standing in the frigid cold scraping snow and ice off my car isn’t my idea of fun. It’s dark and cold outside, so you’re spending a lot of time indoors. Which is the perfect opportunity to tackle projects (and/or goals) you’ve been putting off. Here’s a list of things I plan on doing this winter:

1. Organize pictures

I have a giant box of pictures sitting in a closest at home. They’ve been sitting there at least five years and frankly, I am afraid to even think about organizing them. But, I must. Who wants a giant box of a mess of pictures? My goal is to get them at least semi-organized. First, I’ll spread them out on the floor organized into three sections: high school, college, post-college. Then, buy some albums and put them in there. Then it got me thinking…I haven’t developed pictures in a long time. I take all pics on my digital camera and save them on my computer and as a backup, hosted on my private SnapFish account. Which leads me to part two – which is to go through all my digital photos and print some off to have hard copies of. This sounds like a process, but it will be fun to look back at old pics (at least that’s what I’m telling myself.)

2. Organize contacts
This is another project that I’m dreading, but it is necessary. I have my personal e-mail contacts in Yahoo, my professional e-mail contacts in Outlook under my work account, and a mismash of others in my phone. I need them streamlined into one place, that syncs with my Droid, Yahoo, and Outlook. Been trying to Google how to do this and so far, no dice. This may have to been done manually. UGH.

3. Budget finances
Winter is a good time to take a good luck at the old money situation (or lack thereof). January is great because you just spend mucho dinero on holiday gifts and outfits, and you can now do your taxes once you get that buckets of fun W2 form. So, reevaluate. Get back on track. My dad and I sat down last week and mapped out my budget, which I am now following again after many failed attempts. Then you can do something fun with that tax return. Last year I paid off my credit card with it. This year, I have no credit card debt, so I’m going to save some and perhaps get me an iPad. :D

4. Organize files

I have a very packed drawer full of files – old credit card and bank statements, my car payment statements, miscellaneous medical documents, pay stubs, etc. It’s getting jammed in there. So after I get those 2010 taxes done, I’m going to go in and pitch everything that’s old and I no longer need (and when I say pitch, I mean shred and recycle).

5. Redecorate
You are spending all this time indoors, may as well make it look good! I am doing an overhaul of my bedroom. I have stuff in there I had in my college dorms/apartment, and I don’t think “shot glass chic” is in anymore (or ever, for that matter). Plus my overflowing closet needs some serious help. Perfect time to donate what you don’t want and bring in what looks good. I’m getting some current inspiration from Cupcakes and Cashmere.

What are you working on this winter?

A tale of two bags

Remember when I asked Santa for the Lululemon bon voyage duffel? Well, apparently Santa reads my blog because I didn’t get just one duffel for Christmas, I got TWO! I must have been a good girl last year. So, now I’m in a predicament. I don’t want to keep both because they are way too similar. I’m already a bona fide bag lady, so it would be overkill to keep both. Plus, I can return one and get other lulu swag with it like a nice sports bra or the gym essentials kit. So, which one do you like better? Both are perfect for the gym and traveling.

Sorry for the poor quality photo. To your left we have the bon voyage duffel in black, which I asked for, but to your right we have your fast in flight tote in violet, which matches the cute lulu tank I got with it. Here are their professional photos to give you a better look (couldn’t find the right color for the fast in flight, but you get the idea):

Survey says…

UPDATE: After many tweets going both ways, I’ve decided to keep both after all! I put stuff in both bags last night, and felt Fast in Flight was better for the gym since it’s smaller, and Bon Voyage was better for travel since it’s a bit bigger. They were gifts, after all, and who am I to refuse a gift? :)

Have yourself a spicy little Christmas

Over the weekend, I visited my family in Cleveland for Christmas. We usually go the day after but this year we went the weekend before. So, how does my family celebrate Christmas? Sitting by a fire and exchanging gifts? Well, yeah, but we also drink and eat! (We’re Italian and that’s what we do.) While in Legacy Village, we sipped on Bloody Marys and flat breads, and also made a pit stop at the cutest little hot sauce store Heather’s Heat and Flavor. I LOVE me some hot sauce – Red Hot, Tabasco, Cholula –  you name it, I eat it. So this was right up my alley. Here’s some photos from a fun day:

By the Christmas tree, I’m such a (4’11”) model:

My favorites:

I also bought some spicy peanut brittle that I was going to photograph, but it’s gone…story of my life ;) So tell me, what’s your favorite spicy sauce?

What I’m thankful for…in social media

This is one of my most favorite weeks of the year: Thanksgiving Week. Where I have to buy bigger size pants, and enjoy all the glorious food, friends, football, family and spirits I can handle. By Sunday, I will need a major trip to the yoga studio to sweat out all that stuffing and booze. And with Thanksgiving, we celebrate  all of our thankfulness. Yes, I am thankful for a lot of things (family, health, etc.), but let’s talk about what I’m thankful for in social media.

The “Block and report spam” feature on Tweetdeck
Because let’s face it, I get more tweets in Portuguese than any English speaking person should

The “Hide this post” option on Facebook
Because I don’t care what your horoscope for the day is, or that you need help building a Jackalope Lodge in FrontierVille. By the way, WTF is FrontierVille?

The “ignore” button on Foursquare
Because I really don’t want some creeper from a city I’ve never heard of with 5,000 friends and badges knowing where I am

The spam filter on WordPress.com
Because as much as I appreciate a comment from “Colon Cleanse,” I’m pretty sure I don’t want you on here

OK, we are seeing a pattern here. What else am I thankful for?

  • People that have their photos set for “friends of friends” on Facebook. Hello, 140 new photos! Don’t mind if I do
  • Tweeting a question/thought on Twitter and having a plethora of responses (thanks, guys!)
  • Checking into a bar on Foursquare and getting a free drink just for doing so
  • YouTube videos of anything my heart desires – old TV shows from the 80s, American Idol performances from 2004, Glee songs, my new haircut
  • The wonderful people who read my blog and comment on it…all 3 of you :)

Happy Thanksgiving! May you have many tweets, lots of turkey, and little spammers this holiday season.
